Huw Edwards is a Welsh BBC journalist, presenter and newsreader. He was born on 18 August 1961 in Bridgend, Glamorgan, Wales. He spent most of his childhood in Llangennech with his mother, a teacher at Llanelli’s Ysgol Gyfun y Strade, and father, a professor at University College, Swansea. Edwards graduated with a degree in French from University College, Cardiff.
Edwards is currently a leading presenter for popular UK news programme, BBC News at Ten. He started his career in BBC as a news trainee in 1984, following a brief stint of work experience at radio station Swansea Sound. Edward made BBC Six O’Clock News the most-watched news program in Britain during his time there, from 1999 to 2003. Throughout his career, Edward has presented numerous shows for BBC like One O’Clock News, Breakfast News, Newsnight, Panorama, and BBC News at Five.
He led the BBC commentary team during the opening and closing ceremonies of 2008 Beijing Olympics, 2012 London Olympics and 2014 Commonwealth Games. Edwards soon developed his image in the political sphere by presenting a number of election specials, including the 2007 National Assembly for Wales Correspondent, the 2008 US States elections and the inauguration of Barack Obama. He also served as a Chief Political Correspondent for BBC and reported on politics for 14 years, across a variety of BBC programs.
He covered news events like Diamond Jubilee of Elizabeth II, the death of Nelson Mandela, and the wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle. His team was awarded a BAFTA for their coverage of the wedding of Prince William and Catherine Middleton.
In 2007, he became a Professor of Journalism at Cardiff University, and later became the Vice President of the University. Edwards is a Christian and Vice President of the National Churches Trust.
Apart from being a journalist, Edward has hosted BAFTA Cymru award ceremonies and presented documentaries on topics like the Welsh language, classical music, religion and history. Many of his documentaries were successful and have since won several awards. In 2008, BBC Trust found Edward’s program, Wales: Power and the People – Back to the Future to break organisation guidelines when he encouraged the audience to exercise their right to vote on particular occasions.
In 2011, Edward opened a cafe in Swansea University in the memory of his father. He also was awarded a fellowship of the University of Wales and the Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama.
He is currently married to BBC producer Vicky Flind.
