6 Mistakes To Avoid When Blogging

Updated: Oct 2, 2020

Blogging can be confusing, and it can sometimes be easy to make mistakes. In this post, we're here to alert you to some of the most common mistakes people make when blogging, and direct you on how to avoid making them yourself. Helpful, right?🤩🤩

MISTAKE #1: WRITING WITHOUT A PROCESS

This is first on Akshay Kulkarni's list for Literature. So many bloggers make this mistake, and it can cost you dearly! Bloggers who start writing without having any kind of writing process or plan in place are often setting themselves up for failure, because it just means that your words don't flow as well as they should and you're left with a jumbled mess of writing. To avoid making this mistake, start with writing your title, then create an outline for your post and stick to that outline as much as possible. That way, you'll be able to make sure your points link together well, and you won't go off on a tangent without meaning to.

MISTAKE #2: WRITING ABOUT OVERLY BROAD TOPICS

Lindsay Kolowich Cox's post for Hubspot names this as one of the most common mistakes that bloggers make in their posts. Writing on really broad topics makes it hard to actually provide useful information, as there's just so much to cover! They also attract really random audiences, making it difficult to aim your post at any one particular group. You're far better off starting with a more specific, concise idea, and then going into really helpful and interesting detail on that topic. This way, you'll be able to target a certain audience, and you'll keep your readers far more engaged, as they will feel that they have actually gained something from reading your post.💻💻

MISTAKE #3: YOU LACK CONSISTENCY

If your blog isn't returning great results straight away, it's easy to feel your motivation slipping, which means you start to post less and less. Don't let this happen! Consistency is key to building a loyal reader base. The longer you go without writing a post, the more difficult it is to get back into it, as Blogging Explorer tells us. So, make yourself a publishing schedule that's realistic, and make sure you stick to it. Over time, you will see the benefit!

MISTAKE #4: IGNORING SEO

SEO can seem overwhelming if you don't understand it, I know that. But ignoring it is a death sentence for your blog. If you want to stand a chance of ranking well in search engines, you have to pay attention to SEO, because as Emy's Way says, you don't want to learn about it really late in your blogging career and then have to go back through loads of posts to make them SEO-friendly, it's best to just have an understanding of it right from the beginning. There's a lot of free courses which teach you the fundamentals of SEO available online, so why not give one of those a go to start you off on the right foot?💡💡

MISTAKE #5: NOT INCLUDING A CALL TO ACTION

This is listed by Impact as one of the most common blogging mistakes, and it's one you really should try to avoid. Calls to action allow you to direct people to other posts they may find relevant, or to goods or services that you offer that may be of value to them. You can also use this as a way to get your readers to sign up to your newsletter or subscription platform. This is key in keeping your readers engaged. The more of your content and goods that they interact with the better, ultimately.

MISTAKE #6: NOT REPURPOSING CONTENT

Repurposing content is a great way to get a wider variety of people to interact with it. Some people might not like blogs, but might love podcasts, for example, so turning your blog post into a podcast format will attract a different audience and will therefore promote your brand more extensively. This is one of the best ways to reach larger audiences, so give it a go!📈📈
