Roger Johnson is a television journalist and reporter from Staffordshire. He currently works for the BBC North West Tonight as a main presenter, and regularly presents BBC Breakfast on weekends as well as other National BBC News platforms.
Johnson was raised in Newcastle-under-Lyme where he attended Newcastle-under-Lyme school. Johnson went on to study at the University of Birmingham and then the University of California, Berkeley.
Johnson began his career with the BBC soon after he graduated from university, as a reporter for BBC Radio Solent and BBC Radio Manchester. He made his first on-screen appearance as a sports journalist for BBC Souths South Today.
After this, Johnson became a regular relief presenter for the BBC News Channel, breaking the news of the death of singer Amy Winehouse. He also presented simulcasts for BBC World on global news stories including the Norwegian shootings and the western bombing operations in Libya (2011).
In 2011, after working for BBC South for 14 years, Johnson left to become the main anchor on North West Tonight. While in this position, he anchored coverage for several ground-breaking stories such as the 25th Anniversary Service for the Hillsborough Disaster and the 2017 Manchester Arena Bombing.
Johnson has regularly reported on the BBC’s Match of the Day and Final Score programmes and was part of the reporting team at the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa for Match of the Day.
Johnson has won various awards throughout his career including Regional Sports Presenter of the year by the Royal Television Society (2002) and the Broadcast Presenter Award at the O2 Media awards NW (2018).
He has recently supported and hosted numerous fund-raising events for Willowbrook Hospice in Prescot and the Naomi House Children's Hospice. Previously, he was a patron of the ‘Change My Life’ appeal by the Rose Road Association in Southampton.
