Mishal Husain is a news presenter for BBC Television and Radio, from Northampton. She hosts Today, Impact, BBC World News and BBC Weekend News, and occasionally Newsnight on BBC Two. As well as this, she is a relief presenter for the BBC News at Six and the BBC News at Ten. In the past, she has hosted HARDtalk and BBC Breakfast.
Husain was born in England, but her parents originate from Lucknow, India. She lived in Abu Dhabi while attending school, before returning to England at the age of 12 to continue her education in Kent at Cobham Hall School.
Following this, she studied Law at Cambridge University, before going on to complete a master’s degree in International and Comparative Law at the European University Institute in Florence, Italy.
Husain began her career in journalism as a city reporter in Islamabad, Pakistan for English language newspaper, The News, at the age of 18. In 1998, she joined the BBC Newsroom and News 24 channel as a junior producer before moving in front of the camera where she became the first Muslim presenter of BBC’s Radio 4’s Today programme.
She has worked in numerous roles including the Daily Breakfast programme, Asia Business Report, and as a business news presenter on both BBC World News and the BBC News channel. In 2002, she served as the main news anchor for the invasion of Iraq and during the war. She has interviewed a range of high-profile figures including Prince Harry and Meghan Markle.
Furthermore, the BBC news presenter has written a book named The Skills, published in 2018, in the aim of guiding women on how to achieve their career goals as well as publishing an autobiographical essay in The Independent in 2010, concerning a nostalgia trip to the UAE.
At present, Husain lives in Camden, London with her husband Meekal Hashmi and their three children.
