George Maxwell Alagiah

George Maxwell Alagiah is a British journalist, newsreader, and TV news presenter. Alagiah was born in Colombo, Sri Lanka. At the age of six, his parents moved from Colombo to Ghana in West Africa. Here, he began primary education at Christ, The King International School. He finished secondary school at St John’s College in Portsmouth, England, and furthered his studies at Van Mildert College, Durham University.



In 2004, the Indian Ocean earthquake and hit his home in Sri Lanka and was the reason why he returned to his grandfather’s home in Sri Lanka. He stayed there and worked from 1982 to 1989 for South Magazine, and after this, he began working for the BBC. Alagiah led foreign correspondents, reporting news stories around the civil wars from countries such as Afghanistan, Somalia, Liberia, and Sierra Leone.


Alagiah joined BBC Six O’clock News where he co-presented from January 2003 to December 2007. Alagiah was able to interview a number of renowned figures such as Nelson Mandela, Archbishop Desmond Tutu, former Secretary-General of the United Nations Kofi Annan, and President Robert Mugabe of Zimbabwe. Many awards were attributed to Alagaih throughout his career, such as the BAFTA award which he received in 2000 for his reporting of the Kosovo conflict.


Other notable awards he received were the Best International Report at the Royal Television Society in 1993, winner of the Amnesty International UK Media Awards, and the Outstanding Achievement in Television award at the Asian Awards in 2010.


He met his now-wife Frances Robathan at Durham University, and together they have two children, Adam and Mathew.
